I would always go with the BMW. Although, I'm sure ALL BMW owners would agree with this statement. After all, it is the ultimate driving machine :-)
However, to be fair, you should poll the Porsche folks as well.

Personally I would go after the BMW X5 - it looks better than the big Cayenne boat. I've heard a Porsche Cayenne Tubro's engine tone and that sounded like pure heaven though. The X5 is an older design but it sells well and people love it. Make sure to get the bigger rims on it as the base wheelbase looks ugly.
Take the two for a test drive at different dealerships - get a feel for how they turn - how comfortable the seats are - and their acceleration (how far down you have to press the gas) - how much oil change costs - stuff like that.
Either way - both cars are pricey - I'd be happy with either :).

I've extensively driven and worked on both. The Porsche easily out-handles and out-runs the X5. It is the superior driver's machine. However the BMW has what appears to be a larger and more practical interior. I say appears to be, because looks can be deceiving.
After doing some mechanical work on both including 4 engine changes on X5's, I cannot recommend the BMW from a mechanical or reliability standpoint. The new ones we prepped and service had numerous problems with engines, transmissions, electronics, A/C, power sunroofs and fit and finish. We had no such problems with the Porsches or their cousins the VW Touaregs.
From a styling perspective, I personally think the X5 looks nicer, but that's a subjective opinion...

BMW... I have owned 5 so far. Ordered a Porsche one year and it was delayed due to a dockworkers strike. I took that as an omen and went back to BMW. The local Porsche dealer near my home is populated by creeps. BMW is filled with nice folks.

I should choose the BMW X5 4.8
It`s powerful as hell and drinks less than that Cayenne S.

Definitely the Bimmer. By the way it IS bimmer not beamer or beemer. Those are BMW motorcycles. But either way the X5 would be a much better choice.

DEFINITELY A '07 BMW X5 ((4.8))...Sure the cayennes is fast as well, and pretty good looks...but my BABY comes FIRST on my LIST!!!

X5 for sure, roomier, sleeker, faster then the Cayenne S (Turbo S is a different story).

porsec for performance bmw 4 looks luxery um i would def choose the x5 but if you want osmething nobody has then get the porshe
