One the driving is the last thing they (anybody) wants to give up is their freedom. They would be more home bound, dependent on others. So they block out the obvious danger of not only killing themselves but others.
Another way to look at it is living in denial.
However, with the bathtub, it is they see it as more of a danger of falling, drowning or dieing alone. So it is easier, safer to just stink.

Older people are often scared to bathe because of the danger in slipping in the tub or shower. Such a fall can be lethal to frail elderly, especially if their bones are brittle or if they have heart conditions. Driving, however, is another ball game completely. For starters, giving up driving means giving up freedom and independence. It also means putting a burden on family members who would then have to provide transportation. And not to mention that the loss of driving privileges/abilities is a reminder that they are getting old. Hence, older people will often insist on driving even when they shouldn't.

If your bones were very brittle, you would probably feel afraid to fall in a slick bath tub too. as for driving, well who doesn't feel safe and in control behind the wheel of a car?

The solution is to setup a shower in their car. If they want to drive, then they are going to be clean.
