The fact is that when segregation was the way of the South, schools were not "separate but equal" -- they were just Separate. Since southern universities are now integrated, the better black students have the opportunity to go to better schools.

HBCUs do not have lower standards than schools of similar quality -- but the sad fact is that only a few of them are solid schools from an academic point of view. Granted, they may have other qualities that make them a better experience for some students.

All schools maintain admissions standards based on how many applications they get and how many students actually decide to go there when/if they are accepted. In short, if a lot of people want to go to a school, that school can (and will) raise admissions standards. That's why the most popular schools typically have the highest admissions standards.

Traditionally black universities, like other schools that target a specific demographic, are likely to have fewer applicants. They must lower admissions standards in order to encourage/allow more students to attend.

I was a college administrator for over twenty years and now run the second largest (we're Avis we tray harder) college fair company in the country and I can tell you that is is just not true. College Admissions standards do vary from college to college but there is not truth to the idea that traditionally and historically black colleges and universities have universally lower standards than other colleges and universities.

If this is indeed the case, and this is the first time I've heard this, it probably has more to do with the number of applicants than any reflection on black students in general. Obviously the admission standards will vary widely from institution to institution, including among black universities. There's still a lot of racism in our world, and whites are a lot less likely to attend a "traditionally black" university than a black student is to attend a "traditionally white" university- which obviously reduces the pool of students from which to draw.

Because black people believe in giving our people a better chance at an education. Black colleges are full of intellegence and talent, we don't have to set extremely high standards to promote that to grow.
