Around 6 or 7 months is when you should start. Just put water or diluted juice in it.

My chidren's pediatrician recommends at 6 months to start giving them a sippy cup. Remember to give them juice or water only in the cup and not in the bottle at all as it will show them that they need to associate the juice with the cup. Also once you switch him/her to milk at 1 year old then remember to only put the milk in the cup as well as this will make the transition to the sippy cup and compeltely off the bottle so much easier. Hope this helps. Also try sippy cups with handles as that makes it easier for the baby to hold.

Your kid is probably old enough to go right to a normal cup.
--- EDIT ---
Oops, sorry. I read 23 weeks as 23 months. I think it'll be ok to use a sippy cup as soon as your kid can hold it. Does he/she hold the bottle yet? If so, it's prolly time to try the sippy cup.

I stared my son on a sippi at 3 months. treat it like a bottle. they have a really good starter sippi from avent, it has a white flat tip. Awsome, awsome cup. It is never too early to start them on a sippi. And it doesn't ruin there teeth. Hope you find something. I'm serious about that cup. Try it.

I gave sippy cups as soon as my kids were interested. My son took right to it at 41/2months, while my daughter was more like 10 months. The only thing you can do is try it out and see if your baby is interested, if not try again in a few days. Remember their is no "right" time. Follow your instincts and your babys clues and you will be fine.

When my daughter was 5 months old I started putting the sippy cup in her hands at mealtimes and letting her practice. I started without the valve in it, though so that she'd learn (and she did) that when she tips the cup liquid will come out. I only put water in it too. By 7 months she was using it all on her own without a problem. It's great practice for their fine motor skills.

When the child is reaching for yours. My son started at about the same age. It will likely be some time before the cup can be a regular source of liquids, however, so don't throw away the bottles just yet.

We started my daughter on one around 4 months... same time we started cereal. We introduced it when she was in her highchair. The only time she received a bottle was when she got milk. I breastfed so she didn't get a bottle but maybe once 2-3 times a week. It was VERY easy to transition her.

Now days people potty train new borns. So whatever you think you are the mom. Just let the child have it and see how it works.
