My two girls are close in age (1 year, 1 month and 1 day apart) We had to go and buy and extra crib for my oldest when we switched rooms. We told her that she has a little sister coming and that she gets to go into a new "big sister" room. A month in the new crib and she decided that big girls sleep in beds. ($100.00 gone)
As far as nursery items, we kept the wall colour the same, the wall border the same (pale blue with a toille border of nursery rhymes) but we changed the room around.
We found out that some of our things that we did have, we never used. So we sold those items and bought things that we wished we did have with the first. **a battery operated swing was our life saver. and a baby bassinet**
But.
I also felt that after spending almost two years straight in the same room, every night, I got bored of it and wanted change.
I think that if I could do it over, I would keep the basics the same but change out the art work, bedding, change table pad. Sometimes it could be the little things. Like accessories in your home, change out the accessories in the nursery (it is also cheaper than changing furniture and wall colours)
Best of luck.
Just remember, you will be spending a lot of time in this room too. Decorate it so you will like being in there too.

I am using the same furniture items, crib, swing, bouncer seat..etc...however my theme for boy #1 was Winnie the Pooh. Now four years later my theme for boy #2 is Little Suzy's Zoo. But if you plan on having your kids close together it seems like a good idea to me to do both the same. Cost efficient.

I didn't use the same deco with my boys, is not because I'm rich, but i wanted them to have their own theme. Of course i used the same crib, but my kids are 4 years apart so i gave all my baby deco away, but if your spending that much money on the deco you should use the same one, baby #2 won't nocited!

Yes! I had a boy 6 years ago, then I had twins, boys. Thank goodness, because it means I only had to buy for one more child. I saved everything from my first child, toys, games, books, bedding, bed, etc... It certainly helped us out financially.
Your theme sounds like it will be very nice for a boy or a girl.

of course you can!! It's way too expensive to just use once. And the baby doesn't really care anyway. ;)
