30% of the girls often pondered their muliebrity, and the rest didn't even know what the word meant. If 1400

were ignorant of the meaning, how many girls were there in all?

(The answer in my book is 2,000 girls) Please show your work.

30% knew. 70% did not. SO 70% are ignorant
Let total girls be X
1400 were ignorant
70/100=140000
70x=140000
x=2000

2000 girls total

If "the rest" didn't know what the word meant, then 100%-30% = 70% of them didn't know. If 1400 is 70% of the total population, then 1400 = 0.7P, where P is the population. So P = 1400/0.7 = 2000.
