He wants a puppy but our apartment is too small right now. I want a pet that will be playful & not harmful and that doesn't really bit. Any advice???

My first choice would be a cat, but if you want something smaller, then mice or rats. Mice and rats are VERY social. They love to play, and they are very gentle. I have three white mice that we have had for two years; my daughter is now four, and they have never bitten anyone. They are so sweet and smart. Mice can learn little tricks and they love to be handled and petted. Rats are the same way. Hamsters and gerbils are biters.

All animals require daily care. Since your toddler won't be doing that care, really consider the extent of the care that you will be willing to keep up with. Also, consider that some pets live a long time and it's a big commitment. Rabbits can live inside (in a cage, of course so they don't poop and pee on your floor) but they STINK even when you clean the cage often. Also, rabbits tend bite little hands. Maybe not a great idea. Hamsters are stinky and require regular cage cleanings. Fish aren't much fun. There's not petting or cuddling a fish. Nice to watch though. Even a small tank will need emptied and cleaned regularly which can be a chore. Keep in mind, that once you get a pet you can not take off for the weekend on a trip or go home for Christmas or whatever you do. You will have to find somebody you trust to take care of that animal for you. Maybe go to your local pet supplier and talk to somebody there that can help you make an informed choice for a pet.

Maybe a kitten? They are extremely playful, easy to train, loving, and not nippy. They love toys, and can be kept in a small apartment. I had two kittys in my apartment in collage.

Rabbits also make good pets, can be littertrained pretty easily, but are not as playful.

Ferrets are extremely playful, and can be littertrained. They are very high engery, and very fun. They can have a good time with just a paper sack. Make sure it has been socilized, as they can be nippy.

Good luck in whatever you choose! Remeber, 3 years old is still very young, so it will be mostly your responcibily to take care of it until he is old enough.

I wouldn't suggest getting a rabbit or hamster as they can bite a lot. When I got my hamster, he bit everyone for the first couple of weeks. Also, small animals aren't good for little kids as they can underestimate their own strength an easily hurt them. But I would suggest getting a fish for the boy. (Betta's' are very pretty and are very colorful.) It would also teach him small responsibilities such as feeding the fish 2-3 times a day and cleaning the aquarium. But you would have to help him clean it.I hope I could help!

He's too young for a hamster, and most bunnies do not like to be held - a puppy would be best out of the 3, but if you can't swing it right now he'll wait till you move to some place bigger.

Pet rats.
Far more friendly than a hamster or a gerbil, they don't bite, they love to play and best of all ... they don't stink like other animals do.
A pet rat will amuse itself when you want to be left alone and it will scamper all over you if you want it to.
I have 5 pets rats, all males and they are the easiest little things in the world to take care of.

I'd wait til he's older to let him have an animal. At that age they really can't handle the responsibility and every animal bites. Even the most sweet, docile dog can lash out if messed with the wrong way. If anything, I'd try a fish or a turtle. Sorry.

a rat makes a good pet for a young child. they are very social animals and depending on what you want either a really playful pet (female) or one that will want to cuddle more (male). they bond well to people and can be taught tricks and other things just like a dog can.

Rat came to mind. If you do any online research there's plenty owners who compare their personality to a dog -they can learn their name, do tricks, etc. Watch out for allergies to rabbits and all critters -very common. Take him to a pet store for ~15 minutes. This will give you an idea how he'll react and maybe he'll pick out something small that he likes!

Rats!! They are very playful, smart, clean, and sweet. If you are one of those people that get freaked out by their tails, there are tail-less rats! They come in many different colors and coat variations. You will need to keep a same sex pair. They are GREAT pets!
