I usually go with local. It is easier to get service that way. In addition, I am all for helping my state and my community by paying sales tax. That's just me.

I stick to local to places like Best Buy and Comp USA. It's alot easier in case you have any trouble with the computer you can just call them or take it back. Rather then having to deal directly with HP or Dell and having to go through shipping and all that. Plus shopping local you can sometimes find better deals.
The only reason I would by directly is if I wanted a custom built computer, like how HP lets you pick and choose your parts.

i would rather go to the dentist for a root canal then buy a computer from dell. service stinks bigtime. make sure you have the EXACT information of record for the ownership or they are of no help AT ALL and could care less. if you lose a password, forget it as they go way overboard and little to any of the equipment prior to 2007 manufacture is vista compatibile. Hp is better but again, no onsite. If I had to purchase locally the best deal is probably open box at best buy or a bundle deal at walmart. I like the mom and pop but shop the heck out of it and know what your buying. definitely a buyer beware market.

Depends on what I'm buying. I typically look for the best price. For my laptop, I bought it at Best Buy because they were having a terrific deal on it (but most of the time they are way over priced). If I wanted just a run of the mill desktop, I would probably just get one from Dell or HP. For high end gaming, I would build it myself.
Anyway, that's my thinking.

A local retailer is usually better. You can often get sale prices, and if you ever have problems, you can just take it back - instead of having to ship it to HP.

Check out the warrantys...
If you're going to buy an extended warranty (RECOMMENDED) then check out who offeres what and how long they will keep your computer.
Most of the prices are going to be the same. Some places like BestBuy have only Instant rebates. Most other places have mail-in rebates.
