What do I think of it? It's reprehensible. It is an outward sign of terrible patriarchal society that treats women as chattel.

However, what to do about it is far more complicated. Female circumcision, in the places where it is practiced, is very deeply ingrained in those cultures. In some areas, it is reinforced by religion (Islam - although the practice is not Islamic in origin).

Laws against female circumcision have been largely ineffective because they come from outside. Educating women, providing them real opportunities, is what creates change. Just instituting a law that says "you need to stop chopping off your daughters clitorises" doesn't change the mind of a peasant whose only option in life is marriage.

Just in case anyone is unaware of what female circumcision, entails, what we are talking about here is not akin to male circumcision. Female circumcision involves the removal or all or part of clitoris, sometimes accompanied by the sewing up of the woman's genitals (which often has to be cut open to allow intercourse). This is performed on young girls - historically around the time of first mestruation but now on girls as young as 5 years old.

It's not funny at all. It's a disfiguring and evil crime to perpetrate on a woman. It has no physical or mental benefit at all and is just a way of controlling a woman's sexuality. It is brutal and life-threatening. It is usually done on little girls before puberty and it makes urination, menstruation and sexual intercourse unpleasant to unbearableto impossible. It needs to be stopped in the places that still perform it like Africa. Some women who had it done to them have come forward to protest and women from all over the world need to know about this crime.

its a lie- its female castration. circumcision is removal of extra skin. foreskin on male and clitoral hood on a female.
cutting off the whole head ( there is a shaft of the clitorous inside the body) of the clitorous is like cutting off a penis (or the head at the very the least).

its horrible and should be outlawed everywhere

I have to agree with the other answers that refer to this act as cruel and inhumane. This is an act of violence, of disrespect to the all females! This shows us how society has continued to oppress women .....this act has no benefits at all. Sexuality is a feeling not a gender, you can cut a nd deprive a person from their sexual organs but you cannot take away their sexuality. that act of removal of the clitoris is a barberic tradition to keep women from having sexual pleasure, there for: later then when a woman marries she has to overcome the trauma of been exposed(naked) and have someone hold her down(as a child) as another proceeds to savagely cut off her clitoris...........
Later, when married she is expected to please the sexual needs of a husband and is the deprived of the pleasure of "making love" to her husband. Not to mention the fact that her husband may not be able to please HER sexually......
Worse case scenario if she also marries a man that believes in such culture, well, he might proceed to rape his wife ....this culture believes that a woman is a possession like cattle, he can do as he pleases! So please! when you answer this Q. ladies, do it using atleast YOUR COMMON SENSE!

it is cruel and barbaric. it causes lifelong pain for these poor girls that are forced to get it done. urination and menstruation is painful. sexual relationships are agony, but when these girls are married they have no right to not allow their husbands to have sex with them.

it can cause serious birth problems when having a baby, as well as infections.

not very much as it is demanded by men and performed by men for the man this poor soul will marry, to never have or feel sexual desire because a man deems it , I would love to see this done so that a man never feel or desire a sexual encounter, the population of the world would drop instantly, Men who condone this are surly insecure and afraid that they can not please their wives, and this is a great pity
