Varies on the source, but in most mapping programs (without a specific address), road atlases & household movers guide, mileage is measured from post office of town A to post office of town B using the most direct route, usually the so called scenic route. So if you see 10mi, it could be 10 actual miles or 20 depending on where you need ot go to.

Mileage Between Towns

Many, Many, ways. If you go to mapquest.com it is measured from the actual place to the actual place by miles...EXACT miles. If you are just looking from city to city it is measured from the main post office zip code to main post office zip code. If you are a truck driver, like me, you get paid through what is called "HOUSEHOLD MOVERS MILEAGE". All the mileage "IN" towns is NOT included. Like a load I pulled from North Wilkesboro, NC to Plainfield, CT only paid me for 718 miles with household movers mileage. But the actual miles were 755 miles. mapquest said it was 758, but I did not put in the ACTUAL starting point and ENDING point. Makes a difference. You never get paid "in town" mileage. I can put in the distance from my home to Walmart 38 miles up the road on mapquest and it will be exactly 38 miles. From my front door to my aunts front door in Arkansas mapquest.com said it was 847 miles. BUT anytime I got off the interstate to get gas or stop at a rest area or any other reason I got off the route it listed the miles were off by 2-3 miles. There is another website I use for mileage and that is flyingj.com
It is a truck stop and it also shows me ALL the Flying J Travel Centers along the way I am going. And the fuel prices also. Hope this helped. Measurements in the US are measured in feet and miles...not km

As the crow flies from Main Street (or the geographical center of the downtown area). That's why you'll often find when the sign says 10 miles and you've already gone 11 on the odometer, you might think the sign was wrong.

On a road atlas they are measured by the most direct roadway. By air they are measured "as the crow flies."

The old school maps used to chart it by post offices. Not sure how the new ones work.
