My baby is 10 months old and likes to eat. However, sometimes after I introduce a new food, he throws up. He doesn't do it immediately...is after a few bites that he starts gagging and then the vomit comes. Is this normal?

If your child is throwing up, there's a problem. It seems to me that 10 months is a bit young to be eating "solid" food on a regular basis. Babies' digestive systems are really very immature for the first few years and often don't react well to a variety of foods (historically, women breast fed for at least 2 years, and some as long as 4-5).

Introducing too many types of food too soon can adversely impact your child's development. He is at greater risk for food allergies (peanuts, milk, soy, etc) and his immune system may be compromised for the rest of his life.

I suggest you lay off the "new" foods until he's at least two. Stick to jars of baby food or (more preferable) create your own in the blender with fresh, bland foods (no salt or seasonings please).

Baby Throwing Up After Eating

Cereal should never be in a bottle---it's a 'solid' food. Your daughter might not have the enzymes needed yet to digest anything other than breastmilk. It doesn't usually develop until about 6 months. At that point, you don't even need to bother with yucky cereal, especially rice cereal (many doctors don't recommend it anymore anyway). Cereal is pretty yucky compared to breastmilk. And for the entire first year, breastmilk is to be the primary source of nutrition--'food' is just a learning experience, not something to 'fill her up'. If she's hungry, or having a growth spurt, nurse more often, or try block nursing to encourage more hindmilk. Try offering her soft cubed foods, like ripe pears, avocado, banana, etc. Did you try the cereal yourself? LOL. I don't blame her for spitting it out :)

It is normal too a certain degree. If it is constant and he starts loosing weight he might have food allergies. My son did that as well but he got used to the food. The other possibility is he is eating to much, especially if it is food that he really likes. My son Did that with bananas. If it is a violent throw up get him looked at,or if it continues for a long time. Good Luck.

He's a bit too old to still be on a liquid diet (in response to someone else's suggestion).

So. If it's just a little spit-up, like you might expect from an infant only a month or two old, then I wouldn't worry about it. If it's really vomit then I'd mention it to your baby's pediatrician.

Just you wait. When your kid's old enough to be in school and gets sick, and you spend the night cleaning up projectile-force vomit from all over the bedroom....then you'll be a REAL parent, LOL.

My baby is 10 months too and she has been doing the same thing. It's not jsut with new foods though. I think she is full, maybe I was feeding her too fast, or maybe the food was too thick for her.

Good question!

No vomitting is not normal.

And in response to other people there is absolutely NO need to puree food so that isn't the problem:

You should talk to his doctor about possible food allergies.
