Steam engines and Sterling engines are external combustion engines, and have been well known for centuries now. There are even rotary versions. If you have something, the worst that can happen is you'll find out that someone already thought of it. But a patent is not a guarantee that the thing actually works. I've heard the only thing they won't patent is perpetual motion.

I am afraid that the patent for the external combustion engine has already been given but that time the inventor called it a bomb.

Yes, you can, but there are certain things that are examined before you can do so. You have to prove that it is beneficial to people, that it is workable , and it is safe to use, and no one else has already got a patent on something similar. It is also very expensive to patent a new invention.Something like thousands of pounds.

You'll need to get in touch with the patent office to see if there is a patent on it already,if there is then no you cant.

You can patent virtually anything, provided you can satisfy the patent board that it is viable and you can provide proof that no one else has already done the same.
