kilobyte - 1024 bytes
megabyte - 1024 kilobytes
gigabyte - 1024 megabytes

more exactly, 1,073,741,824 bytes

Its binary math -
1024=2^10 which is approximately 1000=10^3

2^20 is close to 10^6

this is why when you buy a 60 gb hard drive, its not actually 60 gb.

they take 60,000,000,000 (using decimal math) to rate the drive.

the actual size of said drive will actually be 60,000,000,000/1,073,741,824 (because the actual computer uses the correct binary math actual number of bytes on the drive divided by the actual number of bytes in a gigabyte) and end up with a drive size of 55.88 gigabytes.

lets the manufacturer advertise a larger size by using the decimal/binary conversion factor to their advantage.

In theory the answer is 1000. 1000 mega(anything) is 1 giga(anything). In practice though, particularly with bites, the answer may be 1024.
