What are your thoughts on the proposed I.D card scheme? Do you think it would be a monumental waste of money better spent on improving the security services etc. Would it be an infringement on civil liberties and freedom?

If our laws can' t protect us then why have them. It seems that having ID cards would help protect AMERICANS

That horrible Jaqui Smith needs to be removed from power and so do all those who agree with this stupid idea that ID cards will stop this and stop that. The Government cannot even hold our secret data without it getting left on a train or somewhere else. These cards will be yet another fiasco signed and sealed by this failing government and will cause more problems than it can solve. For gods sake why should we here in the UK have to have these stupid cards, get rid of those who should not be here and put a stop on more terrorists coming here and then we can maybe settle down.Of course this charge will go up like everything else because they will say we need to "update" or "upgrade" the cards every year. They will be a complete waste of money and with all the costs of everything going up who can even afford to have one except of course the rich who always get what they want anyway.

It's going to be a massive waste of money, like a lot of grand government IT schemes (NHS system, how many million now)?
The cards security will be cracked, and those responsible for encoding cards will be paid-off/blackmailed into amending data/ID cards.

AND you can bet your bank balance, there will be announced a reason why all the data will be accessible by the US security forces even though the holder has no intention of ever setting foot in the US! Like the saying goes, those who would sacrifice a little freedom for a little more security, deserve to loose both!!

ID cards are a waste of money, and a potential threat to us all in the future. If a right wing govt got into power then the info could easily be misused.
The info will be sold to business and I object to that.
I'm not a loony terrorist and I don't have anything to hide. Its just I'm not so arrogant as to believe that we're immune from mistakes. Like the Guildford 4 and Birmingham 6 were guilty, everyone knew that for a fact. Their ID was not the issue. Years later the truth comes out - they were innocent.
The ID of all the terrorists has NOT been the issue, they had passports, thats a form of ID.
And please, will someone who's pro ID explain how a card stops a suicide bomber?

The issues and the problems are far more complex and will demand far better answers than ID cards.

Living in Spain, where everyone has ID cards, I think it's a good idea. Like the other person said, less credit card fraud.

I'm quite surprised that it seems all the "right wing, this country was great..." people are against this. They're always bloody complaining about immigrants scrounging benefits etc. This would make it more difficult for them to do this. Even as an EU citizen living in Spain, it was very difficult to organise free health care without this and other documents. The benefits system here is much better organised than the UK, no room for ripping it off. (I do work though!!)

I was issued a Social Security number, a Driver license state picture id, I have a VA card, I have a FOID card, I am already a number to the government just like the rest of you. If you own a cell phone or a new car, they have a GPS system in them. If you plan on getting a passport it already has rfid protection.

I think I.D. cards are an excellent idea. I can hardly see it as a big waste of money. It will certainly clamp down on liberties whether civil or not so civil

civil liberties and freedom? I don't consider carrying ID to be an infringement of my freedom or civil liberties. I have no problem with carrying ID as I already carry several forms of ID!!!
Then again, I am a law abiding citizen with nothing to hide. Oh yes and I'm not a right wing control freak I am ,and have been since the late 1970's, a democratic socialist.

It wouldn't worry me if I had to carry an ID card around with me.. I do think that they should be issued though.. I don't feel that we should be charged for them.. who knows perhaps they could en-corporate the ID card with the Passport.. then we may only have to have that one card to be able to travel..

Nice idea.. it would stop those travelling out of the country who had been banned.. if the information was stored on the ID card, as their history could be flagged up in minutes..

I think it is one step closer to having a chip in our necks. One more step to new world order Just like someone Else said why not put that money to protect our borders. How can we have homeland security an have open borders? In my opinion it will be an infringement on our rights.
