1996 Saturn SL1, 4 cylinder, 1.8 liter engine. 106,000 miles on it.....If the repair price is accurate, no way am I dumping that much into this car, but before I go and lock myself down with payments for a new car, I want to make sure that this is an accurate estimate and not just some place trying to rip me off....

That sounds a little steep, call the CAA and see if they can give you an idea also call the BBB and see if there are any complaints against the company.

Try checking on the price of a new or reconditioned head. Repairing a crcked head 'properly' can be expensive but I think $2400 is a bit steep. There should be a bunch of those cars in salvage yards and buying one from them should be a lot cheaper. But you have to understand that any way you go, if you can't do the head removal and replacement yourself, the labor will bite into your pocketbook. Labor rates in most garages range from $65/hr to $95/hr.

Realize that this car wasn't worth more than 10k when brand new (unless you got a ton of options on it). 2400 is a lot of money to spend on this car. For a cracked cylinder head - $2400 sounds a bit steep. Go to a mechanic (NON DEALER) and ask for a quote there. They usually charge less than the dealership to get more business.

My parents 1998 Pontiac Minivan had a cracked cylinder head (V6 so 2 heads) - they paid just a little over $1,000 at a small mechanic place. So there is a comparison for you.

sounds like a ripoff too me, either they are charging you a butt load in labor or they are buying all brand new parts from a dealer. i would check how much the labor is, if its anything over like 8 hours then they are smoking crack. if i were you, i would go to the local junk yard and buy a used cyclinder head with low miles for like $100-200 max and find a place to install it, or do it yourself, if my buddy can install a cylinder head in a car then anyone can do it, lol. just get a chilton manual for the car and go to town.

That's not a little steep. It's insane. A new engine only costs about $2200. Replacing a cracked head should run $500 to $800.

i think the guy is in the ball park, i don't he is ripping you off. if you don't like the estimate, what are going to do with the car you can't sell it like it is, so you will have to discount it. but a used saturn 10 years old isn't worth $2400 either.

I would not install a repaired (meaning Head bored out and sleeve
installed) Head,I think at that price,I would not keep this car, pick up marbles and move to another auto.,

Ask for an itemized estimate. Then you can see where the charges are coming from and tell if it seems legitimate or not.
Good luck.
