When someone is in a hurry, "prolly" is how the word "probably" sounds. Just like the shortening of "isn't it" with "innit" or "aaiight" for "all right." I use "innit" when I wish to convey a certain mood that "isn't it" just doesn't convey. You ought to try reading "A Clockwork Orange" with its intensive NADSAT slang or "Riddley Walker" that tells its story in a sort of degenerated version of English meant to show that thousands of years have passed since Man maintained standards of language. It is helpful to have a working knowledge of slang on the internet, although there is also the consideration of netiquette that discourages the use of text-message type shorthand such as "R U ready" and such.

All that being said, the word that really gets on my nerves is "pressie" for "present." It doesn't shorten the word significantly and sounds like baby talk.

P.S. Trainspotting is another modern novel that has lots of difficult dialect. And of course, we have the old Joel Chandler Harris Uncle Remus tales. Dialect and slang are a fact of life...it is interesting to see it play out in cyberspace as the medium gains more of a foothold in popular culture.

Not much. I figure how they spell it is their business; I know what they mean, and I'm not looking to hire anyone right now, so I don't have to consider their spelling to be anything but a variance in their personalities.

It annoys me when people do the "internet lingo". Like no for know and crap like that. Very hard and annoying to read.
