Tony Blair became the youngest prime minister for donkeys years so Labour came to power after years of Tory rule, Princess Diana died, Hong Kong was returned to china, Channel 5 started - can't remember much else sorry I was drunk for the best part!
Try bbc.co.uk they have an I love the 90's section with news etc from any year.

February 4 - O.J. Simpson is found liable in civil court for the death of Ron Goldman and for the battery of Nicole Brown Simpson. Simpson is ordered to pay $35,000,000 in damages to the families of the 2 victims.
Oh and last but not least that was the year I graduated high school, thanks now I feel old.

New Labour (Tony Blair) won the election in may 1997 after 18 years of a conservative government. The UK handed over Sovereignty of Hong Kong to the Peoples Republic of China.

Labour won the election with just about the biggest landslide ever and the Tories were voted out after 18 years in power.
Princess Diana was killed in Aug 97.
