I feel flourecent light are responsible for may medical problems including ADD, ADHD, and Eplilepsy. I feel even non epileptics get auras or partial siezures form these light bulbs. I though we should ban the flourecent light while now I am hearing they want ban incadecent. This is ridiculous. How do you feel about this ban or efforst to use more flourecent lights. These lights flicker at a very high speed which you do not see but your brain does and I feel this is what is causing so many people to have problems. I think kids will do better in school if the incedecnt light bulb is used.

Yes, migraines I can almost gurantee these lights are responsible for alot of those medical problems and think more research needs to be done before we ban a reliable product. I have better concentration when I am not in a classroom filled with these lights. This is bad idea !!!!!!!

I don't know about flicker problems, at least when the fluorescent lamps are new, but I wonder if there is still mercury in them.
That would present a greater California health hazard than the power consumption, flicker, etc. I think.

In California, where blackouts from too many people using too much energy is a real problem, I can see the banning of less efficient light sources becoming a reality. The newer lightbulbs use 25% less energy than incandescents. Solar power is very expensive to install and not everyone lives in an area where the sun is readily available at all times of the year. Wind sources are becoming more and more popular, however they are being blocked in some areas - where their use would be phenomonal - by military whose radars pick up the propellors as aircraft. Living in a free society does not mean you get to live in it free of responsibility. We have laws against rape, murder, assault and theft because people can not be entirely trusted to self regulate. Likewise, we have laws regulating corporations and the products they make, because organizations of people, like individual people themselves, can not be entirely trusted to self-regulate. As for why cigarettes are still legal.. that's easy. Two reasons. One, we've tride outlawing a harmful and popular drug before - alcohol - and that only made violent crime go through the roof. Two, cigarettes have paid off more politicians to keep it legal.

Fluorescent lights are also a trigger for migraines for many people including me. I find that incandescent bulbs are better for some people but not all. Basically the only light source that isn't harmful is sunlight (UVA and UVB rays pose a very minor threat when sunlight is used for lighting purposes. i.e. opening a window)

Well, there is not as much of a problem with the compact fluorescents, and there are solutions to them:

"Fortunately there are alternatives to standard fluorescent lights. When a member named Timco wonders if the same problems would occur with compact fluorescent lights that are "full spectrum," a member named Rick responds: "Full Spectrum & Compact Florescents will assist health by their higher CRI (color rendering index) and Intensity. Compact Florescent bulbs run from electronic ballasts at much greater intensities and efficiency. You can replace old standard ballasts with newer electronic ballasts but will need to change bulbs to 'full spectrum' for any health benefits.""

So it is not as much of an issue. And the savings in electricity are definitely there. I have many of them at home, and the only issue I have is the ones I use in the garage, which is unheated -- they need to warm up to get the full glow, so I tend to leave them on longer in winter (that is where my wood for the fire is). But since they draw so little electricity, it really isn't much of an issue, anyway.

I'm extremely light sensitive and fluorescent lights are painful to tolerate. The light is way too bright and harsh. It screams light when only a whisper is needed.
