Why is it they can only have a boy and a girl not two girls or two boys? And what do they do with the other child if they can't keep it?

it is not a boy and a girl, it is a boy or a girl. there is a one child policy in china, for population control reasons.
many children are put up for adoption, and there are many orphanages filled with children that have been abandoned (under-reporting of female births is reportedly common). there are also reports of other horrific things happening to these unwanted children - infanticide and selective abortion for example.
the government does not technically support the killing of these babies, but they dont do much to stop it either.
if a family has more than one child and they wish to keep it, they can. but penalties are put in place - such as the "social compensation fee". the parents may be fine, or denied bonuses at work.

In China, you are only be allowed to have one child. The problem is because is someone had a girl, the mother would get an abortion or put the up for adoption. Now, the policy is being lightend up. If you do have too many children, you have to pay an extra tax. Twins are ok. You do not throw it off a cliff or to the dogs.
Sometimes Goverment officals would threathen peoples jobs if they were pregnate.
In farm areas, or ethnic minorities (such as Mongolians or Manchurians) you can have more than on child.

You can have either a boy or a girl, not both boy and girl. It's the one child per family rule, because China is over populated, this is a way to keep population under control. If they have ever pregnant with second child, they'll either have an abortion, sell it or kill it and throw it out to the dogs. It's true, one of my chinese relative in mainland China did, cause they were about to get punished by the government- they were going to take away his job.

China is an over populated country and the government (being communists) have put limits to the amount of ofsping a regular person can have in a lifetime.

Because the population of china is already to big,i believe they make up for 1/5 of the worlds population last time i checked.
