Being a true Brit, i was just wandering if anyone, British or American, knows what a "Homecoming Queen" or "Homecoming King" is. I see them loads in films like 'Mean Girls' and 'Its a Girl-Boy thing', and its really annoying me! What are they??

It's an all-day event that starts off with the football team's homecoming game (hence the name) and ends with a dance.
Homecoming is the school's football team has it's first home game after their (first) away game. The Homecoming King and Queen are two students that are voted by the students. It's a popularity contest and I don't know exactly know what the point is of having the King and Queen.

Homecoming is a specific football game (American football) where the alumni of the high school are invited back to attend the game. Hence, homecoming. Associated with this big game, there is usually a parade around the field and a dance after the game. Two current students are elected to be the king and queen of night. They are elected by their fellow students. Kind of a popularity contest in the school. Then they ride together in the parade during half time of the football game and they are honored with a dance at the dance after the game.

As I said, it is more of a popularity contest than anything else.
