They don't really. When a person dies, their skin shrinks, with the loss of fluids. It seems the hair and nails grow, but they don't really. The cells that produce hair and skin need constant nourishment to grow, and that is provided by the blood. When the blood stops flowing, the cells that supply the hair and nails stop making more hair and nails.

This has been debunked by medical science over and over, but the power of myth continues.
