If you mean the personal benefits to an individual studying it then mainly personal interest I would say! I kinda wished I kept it up rather than change to computing, it is a fascinating subject and being able to work outdoors is so appealing. It also opens a wide variety of careers, not greatly paid (one of the reasons I changed) but gives you a choice.
The benefits to society are locating ever harder to find oil and mineral sources. Although maybe locating oil isn't a benefit to society but that is another question. Also being able to look at the risks of natural disasters, how to protect against them, predict them etc.

Hope this answers your question somewhat although it is only personal opinion.

Last year more than several people looking at my rock garden through the fence told me they had studied geology and would very much enjoy the chance to come over and view it. My rock garden is full of white quartz but it also
has quite a variety of other kinds of rocks...some cut, some not, some polished, some not, pictures the wind has made, designs the water has made, collectors, wood, whatall. The odd thing is that almost without exception all who wanted more time with the rock garden had expressed a study of geology. That left me curious.
If I have to come up with an answer I'd say geology study gives a broader view of history. But that's not why all these people I don't know oddly enough said the same thing. Is it?

Bilbo, Bilbo, Bilbo! When are you going to stop babbling?' If the Bible is the word of god, it should reflect reality. Let's see. According to Ecclesiastes 1:5 the sun actually goes around the earth--as, of course, it must, since, according to Ps 93:1, Ps 96:10, and 1 Chr 16:30, the earth does not move. And the earth cannot move because, according to 1 Samuel 2:8 and Ps 75:3, it is placed on pillars. And because it is placed on pillars, it has an underside and an upper side, as confirmed by Isaiah 40:22 which indicates that the earth is a flat disk. (if earth were a sphere it would not have an under side and an upper side.) So, instead of trying to refute evolution, try explaining why the Bible indicates the above. Added: That's right, Bilbo, keep ignoring reality.

Personal Satisfaction: Long term work within 4 walls can be monotonous ad boring. Geology gets into varying areas all the time and with nature more. So many building projects owes their foundations to geologists.

Career Opportunity: Mining exploration; can the ground support roads and buildings on that land: safe guarding mud slide areas; grand intercontinental projects (see link)

Future Potential: while people want to get creative with constructions and safe guarding themselves from natural disasters, geologists will have a demand.

I studied Geology for 2 years. it incoperates all the sciences and mathematics. Paleontology ( biology) Geophysics ( physics and maths) Geochemistry ( chemistry) , Civil engineering involves understanding geology. If it wa snot for Geology we will never had had Dams, bridges, The London Metro, New York subway. We would never have roads. You would not have diamond and stones in you rings. never have gold and silver. you would not have coal and oil. and Gas . so you see the importance of Geology.. I can go on but I will stop here
