"Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain" was the US battle cry in the Spanish American War of 1898. There's still a debate as to whether the Spanish actually sank the US ship Maine or whether it simply blew up by itself. Nevertheless it started the war.

I would say the worse thing was the Civil War of 1936 to 1939. And Francisco Franco coming to power.
