It shouldn't really matter. Your DSL connection (if you have Verizon) is 768 kbps. If you have another provider, it is at most 5 Mbps. The wireless network has speeds of either 54 Mbps or 108 Mbps - depending on if you are on wireless-B, G, or N. In any case, it is many times faster than your DSL connection. Plugging in directly to the router will give you a 100 Mbps connection, but since the connection past the router to the internet is still only 768 kbps, it doesn't matter.

There are generally three types of speeds available for consumer when you're talking about having a wired connection to your router: 10Mbit, 100Mbit and 1000Mbit (or 1Gbit) connections.

Obviously, a 10Mbit connection is slower than an 11Mbit 802.11b or a 54Mbit 802.11g wireless connection, but 100Mbit and 1000Mbit are much faster than wireless.

However, bear in mind that most high-speed internet access will only give you a little as 384Kbps to 30Mbps (FiOS) download and about 384Kbps to about 5.0Mbps (FiOS) upload. So, while you're connecting a higher speeds internally, you're only going as fast as your ISP will provide you.

The speed difference is more apparent when you transfer large files internally between computer to computer on your Local Area Network (LAN).

there are a number of wireless systems with different speeds - and your speed is actually determined by many other factors that are out of your control ( like your provider and the site you are downloading from )

AND wireless is NOT faster ( unless you have a top of the line system and even then you can get a faster hardwired connection )

I believe wireless is limited to transfering data at 1.5 MB / s, so if your DSL connection is faster than that, then yes you are losing some of your bandwidth. Otherwise you aren't missing anything.
