If you go to a restaurant and you dont eat everything and you want to take the leftovers home with you because it was so great but you were not hungry (or something like that), and you feel embarrased about it, you ask for a "doggiebag" as if you were taking it home to your dog (which might be true of course).

If you have left-over food in a resturant you can ask them to put it in a doggiebag to take home. Its not neccesarily a bag tho cause if its a pizza then it cud b a pizza-box but u get the idea!

A doggiebag is the un-eaten part of your meal the waiter or waitress will put in a paper bag or Styrofoam container for you to take home. . .naturally you have to ask them to package it for taking home. It is an old custom in the USA after paying a premium price for a big dinner which one could not finish, one would say , 'Oh could you please put that into a doggiebag for my dog or cat', however it really is for oneself to finish.

As everyone has said, it's a container to take home left over food. I am old enough to remember that we actually did ask the waitress if we could have a bag to take home leftovers for the dog, knowing full well we didn't have one.
It has become socially acceptable to ask for a "doggie bag". Unfortunately, I usually leave it on the table or on the top of the car and don't end up getting it home!!!!

It is a cute little phrase that means taking the food you didn't eat in the restaurant home with you in some kind of container (these days more often a plastic box than an actual 'bag').

It's a bag with your leftover food from a restaurant. Some people feed the leftovers to their dogs, but I think most just save the leftovers for themselves later.

In the restaurant, if you want to take some of the food home, you don't tell them it's for you. You ask for a DOGGY BAG ( you don't have to give it to he dog, though, especially if it is a nice profiterol or something!)

years ago at restraunts if you wanted for your steak bones (or any uneated food) could be placed into a paper bag that was lined on the inside with tin foil.
so bones in the bag = doggy bag (the bag you would take home for your dog )
