A lot of Architecture firms that have large company clients and large spaces to build (100,000 sf+) often utilize outsourcing firms that have drafters /architects in other countries who can produce the plans and analysis often much quicker, and much cheaper. they often do this because the work plan time lines are very very tight and require a large team that the firm may not necessarily have the staff and time for. The investement becomes profitable because the firm can charge the client for the outsourcing inside of their fee and still have plenty of room to cover the firm's actual labor, still make a profit, and get the job done on time.

It is a interesting concept, and has been the subject of a lot of debate in the architecture industry as well. Some clients are actually starting to qualify that Outsourcing is prohibited.

I can tell you that a lot of medical transcriptionist jobs are outsourced to foreign countries. Transcriptionists are the people who type up medical reports for physicians and hospitals. There's a lot of debate about that since people working in foreign countries have access to people's medical information. The reports that are being typed in foreign countries is an actual medical record. If you need more information on medical jobs being outsourced type in why are medical transcriptionist jobs outsourced to foreign countries? or type outsourced jobs. They are really outsourced because foreigners don't charge as much for the same jobs that Americans perform. The companies also receive a tax break.

It actually began way back in the 60's, with mainly bookkeeping services being outsourced. It continued, creeping into more and more technical services until by the 70's almost all electronics were being made in Taiwan. Things spread from there, and since there were no tax consequences for doing it, the corporations took full advantage, with no concern at all about the American worker. It was helpful during Reagan's battle to crush all unions. It has been responsible for higher and higher profits every year, none of which was returned to the country the companies started in. It was also contributed to by the lack of engineering and other science degrees from US colleges, while other countries, especially China, began to produce multiples of the degrees in the US.

There are many sources on it by typing "outsourcing." I just looked at a clip from John Stossel's 20/20 on ABC clip on it. He exposes the myth that outsourcing doesn't benefit the laid off workers. He does give examples of people in that plight.
