Will vary a lot by county. Try contacting the local county agency that issues building permits; they often are figured that way.

I agree with steele Luv,Im not sure of exact square foot prices but my personal house could be an example.I live in a south suburb of chicago. We looked at new houses going for around 4 to 500,000.Those houses are from 3 to 4000 square feet.My house had 2200 ,since I like the neighborhood and figure to be here atleast 10 more years I put a two story addition with 800 square feet. Now I have 3000 Im completely happy the way it turned out.Addition cost me 45,000.00 but I did alot of the work myself. My mortgage would have doubled if I moved. Most people said I wont get my money back but if I sell today Ill get most of it back plus my original equity.Plus those new houses only 1 mile away are paying triple my taxes and the builders are doin crap work.Addition was right for me.If you like where youre at the fix it up and stay. They are doing it in all the better neighborhoods in and around the city.

This will vary greatly on the location of the home, how developed the local systems are, and the type of house you are building. In southern California Fees to build can be $150,000 or higher before you buy a single supply. In less developed area you may have to pay to have water, sewer or electrical services available to the home. Building materials in some parts of the country are more expensive than others as well. Stucco is cheap here, but try to build from oak and your expenses shoot up. Your best bet is to check with builders, contractors and architects in your area.

Although costs varie slightly in different regions, the base cost averages about $ 80 / S.F. Add to that the kinds of ammenaties you'd like to have in your home - ie; ceramic tile vs. sheet goods; granite counters vs. formica; whirlpool tubs...etc. Amenities and room finishes can drive the costs to over $ 200.00 / S.F. Have your architect pay carfull attention to your budget and he should be able to ballance between square footage and amenities to suit your needs.

It all depends on where you live. Where I live it is right at about $100 per sq. ft.
