r/o = rule out ..your symptoms appear to be that diagnosis so the doctor will start there and rule that out

R/O means to rule out. That's exactly what it means. You don't HAVE it, they have a suspicion only. Sometimes, they may not even suspect that you have something, but they still have to rule it out if the symptoms are close.

It means rule out. You may or may not have it. They don't know for sure so they want to rule out the condition.

r/o means, literally, "rule out". It means that they don't know for sure what something is, but they are trying to determine that through tests. It's sort of a doctor's way of saying "maybe it's this, let's check it and see."
