So i found out today that I have low iron. I will be 28 weeks next week. I was just wondering what consequences there were with the fetus and the low iron? am I hurting my baby by being anemic and not knowing it for so long?

Calm down, the baby gets the nurtients he/she needs before you do. The baby is probably not suffering a bit, just your body. You need the iron to carry oxygen in your blood since you can type and have not been admitted to the hospital, I would wager that you are low but only a bit. With both of my previous pregnancies I ended up anemic in the last two months and for a couple months after. If the doctor prescribed supplements, take them. Eat spinach, broccoli and red meat and take a little extra time to rest for the next couple of weeks and I bet your iron concentration will improve.
There are some risks with really bad cases of anemia but you aren't there or your doctor would have admitted you. Mostly, the anemia will weaken your body because the cells can't get as much oxygen as they want when they want. You may feel extra tired or just plain weak but that means you need to rest. You and the baby will be fine. Just continue with what the doctor told you and call him if you are worried or feel funny.

No, you are not hurting your baby. You are anemic because your baby is draining you. Funny thing about our bodies, if the baby needs the baby gets and we go without. I'm sure your doctor gave you an iron supplement just make sure to take it, and with it take a stool softener like "colace" OTC and safe to take during pregnancy because the iron will do a number on your regularity.

Good luck and don't worry

Eat anything with high iron you can. Drink carnation instant breakfast drink, red meat, berries. Not to scare you, but I was severely anemic with my son and he is autistic. Nobody can say what causes autism but I keep thinking If I had taken more supplements things might be different. Make sure anything you put into your mouth is a significant iron source. Good luck you and baby will be fine.
