The 1870 is a type 4 (legend on obverse) dime. Seated liberty is on obverse and One Dime on reverse, with a wreath around it. I am not sure what you mean by smooth surface on banded edge. I do know the Liberty Seated dime was a favorite coin, to have made into a love token. The reverse was smoothed down and fancy engraving was put on it in the form of initials or design. The Victorian age was famous for it's coin love tokens, here as well as England.

The 1870 Dime is of the Seated Liberty type, with a wreath on the back. In that year they were minted at Philedelphia and San Francisco. 471,500 were minted at Philedelphis and 50,000 were minted at San Francisco. The Philedelphia ones can r4ange from $ 8.00 in Good conditioin, to over $200 in uncirculated condition. The San Francisco can run from $200-$1500, depending on condition.

take it to a coin dealer. He will appraise it for you. It very definitly
worth something. My husband many years ago was a coin dealer , if he were still living he would have gven you a ball park figure.
with silver prices raising and dropping it is hard to put a price on a coin. Coin collecting has dropped considerably. But You do have a rare dime, please be smart and have a coin dealer apparaise it for you.
