set ur tv up so that it is powered by a bicycle. by doing this when your kids want to watch tv they will have to pedal to get the tv to work. a study was done by sociologists and they said kids who watched over 21hrs of tv a week went down to 3hrs of tv per week because of the new 'technology'

Parenting! Watch the kids and give them something else fun to do. When left to their own devices they'll just watch tv or play video games or on the internet. If parents took a more active role in teaching their kids how to stay busy then the kid wouldn't be forced to default to television 12 hours a day.

It is easy Practice what you preach and keep the little buggers busy.

My kids watch very little TV. They like DVD's but my oldest is obsessed with the computer (which may be worse than TV) and the little one (age5) is too busy to pay much attention. She'd rather play outside or with her toys. Kind of lucky that they are a little on the hyper side and don't like to sit still.

My cable has been cut off for 2 months now and other than missing a Dr. Who and Avatar they aren't whining about it.

Make it so you control how much they watch. If they can't watch the tv, they will start to develop interests in other things and then they won't want to watch it anymore. Make it more of a privlege than a right.

I would think that turning it off would be a good start. Another way is to not let them start. The best way is to occupy them by teaching them how to talk, walk, and many other things they need to know.

we have game night which is a hit; the more time and attention you give; the less dependent on TV ; it is really the example that you set ; when we went to Portugal and we didn't have TV for a month; we didn't miss it; out for walks, played games and cards ; talked etc; read , puzzles etc
