1.) product means multiply, so 4 times x
decreased by means subtract, so subtract 7 from 4x
choice D is your answer

2.) Let c = Caroline's age
Then Brittany's age is 1/4 times c

Since Brittany is 2 yrs old, then 2 = 1/4c

Multiply both sides by 4 to cancel out the fraction and you get c = 8. Caroline is 8 years old.

The product of 4 and a number...
Use x to represent that number...
Product means to multiply...

So 4x...

Decreased by 7....
So subtract 7 from 4x....

4x - 7 = D

Brittany is 1/4 Carolines age....
Britany is 2...

2 divided by 1/4 would give you Caroline's age.

2 divide by 1/4 =

8 Years old. So Caroline is 8 Years old. None of your answers are correct for this problem.

To confirm this is true, if Caroline is 8, take 25% or 1/4 of 8.
2 + 2 + 2 +2.
This confirms that Brittany is 2, and your answer key is wrong.

Hope this helps.

Question 1: D)4x-7

Question 2: If Brittany is 2, 2 x 4 = 8 years old for Caroline
If you meant to say Brittany is 1/2 Caroline's age, then Caroline is 4

1) D
based on where the comma is, replace "a number" with x
THe product of 4 and X,decreased by seven
This means (4*x)-7
4x-7

2)
Britanny age = 1/4 * carolines age
B = 1/4*c
B=c/4

Now brittany is 2 years means b=2
b=c/4
2=c/4
cross multiply
c=8
caroline is 8

D.
caroline is eight or you wrote the problem wrong. you would just multiply brittany;s age by 4 and get 8. but that's not a choice.

We have an education system that is designed to accommodate even the dumbest of students. If you're one of the smarter kids, you might be put on some "advanced" track that has you a grade level or two ahead of the other kids, but for the most part, you're just sitting around being bored at the constant exercises in things you understood after about two minutes of instruction time.
