TV could answer infamous questions like, "Where do babies come from ?" and "How are boys different from girls?". It shows kids on shows getting into trouble for doing certain actions and some realize that if they do them, they will get into trouble too. It helps develop their creativity and gets their imaginations going, although that depends on what they are watching. It opens the door to the diverse cultures and races in the world. It can also help language and speech development as well, but once again it usually depends on watch they are watching.

There are some good effects that I have noticed, and mainly has to do with the attention span. I know you're not supposed to compare your kids to others, but I compared my daughters with her cousins. My girls have a closely monitored TV watching time. Most of the time. I have seen improvements in their ability to focus and retain attention for 20 minutes at a very early age. To have the attention of a 12 month old for 15 minutes is a miracle. And she wasn't sleepy. Of course I played educational tapes, not something filled with commercials and other stuff. Her vocabulary is way ahead of the normal expectations. She was constructing 5 word sentences before she turned one. Right now she'll be 2 in a couple of months, and she's got a knack for sophisticated words.
She says "I appologize, mom!" that doesn't mean she's pronouncing it right, but still...Of course, she doesn't watch TV for more than an hour a day... sometimes goes over an hour, but that's not happening often.

Her thought processes are advanced, and well... she stays put for a few minutes too. :)
Emotionally they're ballanced, and not any crazier than any other kids. I hope that helps.

A few shows on T.V are educational

for children: Between The Lions,

Sesame Street, Blue's Clues,

The Magic School Bus !! That is about it.

A child should never watch more than an hr. or

two of educational TV a day, and should never

watch anything but educational TV.

The problem with many, not all, but many

parents, or guardians of children is that

they put their children in front of the TV,

allowing them to watch anything, using TV

as a babysitter for their kids, instead of

spending the quality time the kids really need

from them to know they are loved, to know

that their parents care about their education.

Read to your children alot.

My wife's sister, has always allowed her child

to watch anything on TV she wanted, and to

watch TV for three plus hrs a day - today,

that child being only 7 and a half yrs old,

likes to watch MTV show that talk about sex,

and she already likes to wear skimpy clothes,

having a dirty filthy mouth.

If a person decides to have children, they need

to choose, before the child is even conceived,

that they will raise that child properly, and also

read ALOT of books and talk to many other

parents.

The good effects are that if your children watch good quality (not spongebob) television is that it becomes a learning opportunity and not just recreation. Small children see many things on TV that they wont see at home and learn about animals, alphabets, numbers from the shows that they watch.

Worldliness vs nerdiness.
Awareness of the power of the media.
Education, in buckets, if they watch the right stuff.
Unwinding time (adults do it, why not kids?!).
Fun.
Common ground to discuss with other kids.
Exposure to cultural genres a world away from their parents' input.
Ease with technology (with Sky and Dvds etc).
Keeps them safely occupied whilst parents do important jobs, rather than creating tension.

There are plenty of negatives, mind you !!!

Honestly, for the way things are going today, I'd keep'em straight away, as far as I could from television- and i stay kinda away from it too- it's real crap, bad for us, it totally brainwashes us, and kids' programs are FILLED with subliminal messages. i wouldn' want my kids to be subdued to that.

I don't know what the professionals would say, but I love when my 4 year old retells a story that he saw on TV and really enjoyed.

It depends on if a child is a visual learner... if they learn visually, then they will learn mostly from what they watch on tv.
