The only really easy way is to buy a combi unit. (that plays both vhs and dvd) Some of them have the vhs to dvd record facility.
Good luck, sorry about your dad. Mine went years ago.

Since you posted this question in the TiVO & DVRs category, I will respond accordingly. You can plug your VCR into your Tivo directly. Using the Video, L/R audio cables connect between the video out (on the vcr) and the video in (on the tivo). Once you have done this press record on your Tivo, and then press play on the vcr. It is a one-to-one transfer ratio, meaning a 2 hour VHS will take 2 hours to transfer to your tivo. Once you have the program on your tivo harddrive, you can either leave it on there, or you can transfer it to your computer via Tivo-to-go and burn it to a DVD..

plenty of ways to do this......

if you have a working vcr and a seperate dvdr recorder ( s-video and phono are the best way to transfer ) depending on age on vcr. if not use scart leads.

If you aren't sure any the connections on the back of the equipment, you can buy a dvdr/vcr combi about £180. then no need for transfer cables, just one into your tv.

If you get a multi format dvdr/vcr then you can send the new recording out to friends and family.

Sorry to hear your news about Dad

If you have a computer, you can buy a input device to copy the VCR to the computer and then burn it to DVD.

Most DVD capable computers come with capture software as do the USB input devices.
Some computers have RCA inputs to do this.

You can then edit anything you don't want and burn it. It takes some time, but usually easy.

Good luck

If you don't want to buy a whole new DVD VHS recorder, many DVD rental stores offer data transfer services and they can put the content of the VHS onto a DVD for you. There are online services that also do it (I've done it with records to CD).

ooh.. easy way - some dvd players for tvs do this! Any family got them? cheappish nowadays

or

has your pc a video / audio in thingie?

Ideally connect video to pc using video/audio in connectors (long story!)

then use software eg Pinnacle? to capture.. then choose how to 'capture' - then record onto dvd after editing (music etc)
