The greatest recent author is Douglas Adams. He's hilarious and entertaining. He wrote a nonfiction book about endangered animals that was brilliant. I'd highly recommend any of his books, but you need to read them in order depending on the series you're reading.

The best author of all time would be Shakespeare. That one is easy. Regardless of whether or not you think he wrote all of his own works, the plays under the name "Shakespeare" are the greatest ever.

Stephen King.
His ability to bring characters to life and make you feel as if you are part of the story yourself is unmatched. Even when the storyline falters, which is rare for him, you still get sucked into the lives of his characters. This is a trait that most authors only dream of.

There are so many good authors that it would be impossible for me to pick out one as being so superior to all of the others that he/she could be called "The Greatest".

The greatest writer who ever lived was William Shakespeare, nobody else is even close. The greatest american writer in my opinion was Mark Twain. My favorite modern author is Kurt Vonnegut.

The best author of all time is Dr. Seuss, Ted Geissel. There was just such joy and inventiveness and laughter in his books. He invited your brain to play.
