depending on how often you use your chimney but we get ours cleaned once every year or so, you should get those chimney logs you can get pretty much anywhere you let that burn on its own and it does clean your chimney as well save alot of money, but it is recommended to get it clean at least every 2 years.

You should definitly service you chimney before you start burning wood, assuming it is a wood chimney you are referring to. The proper way to clean a chimney is with a brush that is designed for the diameter of chimney you have. I have cleaned my own chimney for decades now, (only slid off the roof once) . I sometimes clean my chimney several times winter based on how dry my wood is and how hot I am burning the fire.. Remember, small hot fire are the best to eliminate excessive build ups of cresole. I personally would never use one of those prefab logs things.. I have read they damage the linings in your chimney... If you have trouble keeping an upward draft,, chances are that your chimney is really dirty... good luck

We have ours done 2 times a year. The most important one is in fall to prepare for winter use. We use it as much as possible to keep gas bill down in winter. Then again in spring to get rid of any built up creosote as a precaution against a house fire as we also use it off and on in spring and summer for ambiance. If you are going to use it for heat definitely get it done at least once a year, before you do

It should be inspected annually, and service provided if necessary.
