I saw an ad in the paper for a government job with great benefits, etc. I called the number provided, and they said they would send me materials and an application for a fee of $70. When I tried to question them about it, they were pretty rude. They said I will get my money back if I don't get the job. Is this a scam or is it real? I'm a little suspicious, but if it's legitimate, it sounds great.

scam, scam, scam, scam!

The government does not go through 3rd parties to hire. You would submit an application directly to the department you want to work for.

No. The government (at least any level of US government) doesn't charge you a fee to apply for jobs. You can go to www.usajobs.opm.gov/ and find and apply there for free.

Chances are the people you spoke to are just going to print out the jobs available and the application materials from this site (or one similar like www.fedworld.gov/). Don't fall for it - save your money and use the Internet to find and apply.

Scam, any company/gov that is hiring will not charge you a fee to apply for the job. This is a company that prob sends out your file to several people hiring and they say you will get your "Fee" back but I doubt you ever will. Just look in the paper and on monster.

No, a goverment job pays for it's own processing. And when they say processing, I'm assuming they mean back ground investigation? The goverment will cover it if they find you suitable. And FYI, goverment jobs are most of the time not advertised in news papers. They are advertised on a goverment site called USAJOBS.com
Not sure if it's a scam, but it does not sound legite.

Scam. What they send you is a list of people hiring. You can go to the employment office and ask them for free.
