If your Protege is anything like my Grand Prix you won't find the radio code written down anywhere, including the manual. I had to take mine to the dealership to have it reset (cost me $75.00, but they wrote the radio code down for me and now I keep it at home -- don't want to keep it in the car just in case someone steals the radio, and since I live near Detroit that's a very real possibility).

Radio codes are set in the factory at time of manufacturing. You will need to contact a Mazda Dealer to have them find it out for you. The cost of this for my car here in Aust is $20's.
If you bought it secondhand contact dealer and ask them to contact original owner for the code they had for the radio. Hopefully they will remember it.
Because it is a security number to prevent theft it would have been given to original owners at time of purchase.
Good luck, hope this helps.

There is a master code to unlock the radio. Call your dealer and a tech may be kind enough to give it to you over the phone since the car is a 93.

Usually you can get the code through the dealer if you give them the serial number from the radio itself. If you have them remove radio then of course they will charge you but if you took it out yourself and got the number most likely they can look it up for nothing. I went in with number and the ownership to vehicle and got the number in 2 minutes and no charge.
