When he died, he became one with the force. That's how he (and Yoda) were able to teach Luke.

At the end of Revenge of the Sith, Yoda tells Obi-Wan that he has been talking to Qui-Gon and has learned a new ability in the force. It's explained much more in the novel.

This question will never be properly answered. I first saw IV when I was a kid. Now at 40, I still haven't been satisfied with a solid answer. Every answer that has been suggested falls short of covering all of the bases. Basically, it comes down to this... Lucas didn't think it through when he made the movie. If Star Wars had bombed, there never would have been a 2nd or 3rd movie (V,VI) to develop the other parts of the story. Just pretend, like everyone else does, that Darth Vader, by "killing" him, causes Ben to become part of the Force. Any other answer was made up after the fact and frankly these types of answers just make it more confusing.

He broke the material force within even before Darth struck him with the saber. He came to the realization that his spiritual force was more important than his material force. He broke free in the same sense Kevin spacey is talking about in k-pak. he caught a ray of light.

That's been debated forever. The way it's explained in the book is that he willed his spirit directly into the Force in order to be able to continue to communicate with Luke for long after his "death". Without the spirit and without the Living Force, the body's atoms converted to energy and were dispersed.

Supposedly, when one truly is one with the Force, when they die, they disappear and become part of the Force. That's why Luke could see Obi-Wan and heard him say, "Use the Force, Luke."
