I've heard a few things myself...
First of all, the bible represents a place for direction when lost...and some travellers who end up staying at hotel/motel rooms sometimes feel lost - the bible is a reference to find that way back home (in God's heart).
Another theory I heard is that it's actually a paradox for Christmas...Remember when the travelling party couldn't find a room at the Inn? They all had to stay in a manger, or something like that?!? All of the Inn's, which have been around for centuries, felt that they might be persucuted (cursed) for not having a room that night....(?)
I hope this helped...

The Bibles in hotels are often put there by organizations interested in evangelization. So it is not that the hotels buy Bibles, but they are given to them by Christian organizations.
The organizations are called after a Biblical figure Gideon, a judge. The first Gideon organization was formed after a casual meeting of two enthusiastic (but forgetful) Christians in a hotel, who had both forgotten their Bible. They felt that every hotel should have a Bible. This was on the 14th of September 1898. The hotel was called ‘the Central Hotel’ and was situated in Boscobel, USA.

The Bibles are placed there by the Gideons. The hotel simply lets the Gideons put the Bibles in the rooms.

There is a group that provides them free to the hotels. As long as it is free the hotel puts them in the rooms. If dont want it there it will be removed if requested.

many hotels no longer observe this tradition as the # of religions practiced in this country have expanded greatly...the reasoning was, as others have stated, that it is/was a form of evangelism by the Gideons...it also ties into the idea that in the past hotels/motels were often used as temporary housing for transients (ie. bums) who were in need of saving...iut was also a way for travelers to ensure they could reach the word of God while travelling to pray for safety or if they were unable to locate religiousservices while travelling...

Tradition more than anything, really. The Gideons are responsible for placing them, but it was originally started by the International Bible Society.
