For some time, I've noticed how much slower I read than most of my friends. Being an English major in college, this really hinders getting my work done in a timely, non-stressful manner. Is there any techniques I can practice to teach myself to read faster?

SQ3R method: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review

First, Survey or pre-read the chapter titles, headings and subheading. Then Question (who, what, where, why, when) before you begin reading from your survey. Then Read through each section, keep a dictionary handy of words you don't know, read carefully but don't "fixate" on sections too long. Then Recite, which is your times to discuss the material with others, try answering your questions, explain the main points of the chapters. The Review ... go back and read it again.

A good book of reference is Cornerstone: Building Your Best by Robert Sherfield, et al., about college learning strategies.

I know an old friend who took a speed reading class when she was only 12 and she loved it and felt it was very useful.

practice is your best friend i know you've probably heard this before but you have to practice alll the time try playing word games in the car for instance you and others in the care find words that start with a then b thenc so on and so forth then who ever finishes the alphabet first wins, its one man for himself. and its quite entertaining for car rides

there are speed reading classes.
i used to work at a university and they would project
the reading material at increasing speeds to build up
your reading speed. it was a "reading lab" they had.
maybe your university has one.
