Same reason we commemorate any other situation that dealt with a race or nation overcoming a huge obstacle in their existence.

These people went through worse situations than any normal person could ever fathome. These are things that should be passed down through generations no matter the origin of the story.

Commemorating people like these demonstrates a mass of human will power and what people are capable of (good and bad).

So that we never forget how barbaric mankind can be.

But I would ask people to remember ALL the holocaust victims. Whilst the Jews suffered worse than any other group, they weren't the only ones. The methods of mass murder were first tested on the mentally ill, and also used on other groups too. Please remember all of these people, whose only crime against the nazis was being different.

so that this poor group of human beings will never be forgotten for the atrocities they were forced to endure because of their nationality and religion. this world has witnessed some horrendous events, the holocaust being one of the worse.

So we never forget what happens when the world does nothing but sits by and waits as a madman gains power.

To keep in mind that however irrational it may be, you can be killed because of your name, race, haircolor, religion, social status and sexual preference if you don't have a country to protect you.
