I want to laugh when I find something funny, not when canned laughter tells me something is supposedly hilarious. I rarely watch the sitcoms of today to begin with, because of all the putdowns, sexual innuendo, and selfishness. Have you ever watched a sitcom or comedy routine, and found yourself not laughing at all?
I'm not a prude and have a good sense of humor, but canned laughter insults me, because what it is saying is that I can't think for myself. Voice or vent your opinions.

Laugh tracks insult the intelligence of intelligent people. Let's face it -- the vast majority of people who watch sitcoms just want to sit there like slugs and be entertained. They don't want to think about what they're watching, so not only do the jokes have to be "dumbed down" the laugh tracks have to be thrown in to prompt these idiots and say "Hey, this is funny." So laugh tracks are really saying that 80% or better of the people watching that show are too stupid to know what's funny or what isn't. On the flipside, however, I like the shows that are filmed or taped in front of live audiences. Sometimes the reaction of the crowd is more amusing than the jokes themselves...

If they didn't have the laugh track, it might make people realize just how not funny most of these shows are. Laugh tracks are there because we are unconsciously affected by what others around us do. Even if we know the laughter is fake, it makes us more likely to laugh if we hear others laughing. But of course if you hear obviously canned laughter laughing at something that is obviously not funny at all, it is just annoying. The interesting thing is that shows that are done in front of a studio audience actually have even louder "laugh tracks" and it is all real, because the studio audience has been so pumped up to laugh at anything, and because they are all fans and are excited to be there.

I tend to agree with you here. There are hilariously funny movies out there and they never have a laugh track. But every sitcom out there does. There are the few shows that don't, like Scrubs and the Office. Those I find funnier than the sitcoms because they are more my style. Yes, the laugh track makes you feel like you missed something if you don't laugh along. Or it makes a stupid joke seem like a big laugh, when it usually isn't.

I hate them hate them hate them.

One of my favorite programs was Sports Night. When they released it into syndication, they added a laugh track. Completely annoying.

When the "audience" laughs, I don't have to.

I do find it insulting. But they aim the programming to the lowest common denominator of viewer, and they apparently assume they are comedy-impaired.

Its about time somebody said it! Yes! Laugh tracks are designed to program your input on what is socially accepted comedy and whats not. Besides, its just lame.
