My best friends son who is 9 years old about 7 days ago started acting funny and running around the house screaming about seeing things they where not there and scared of her cats saying they where trying to kill him and odd things like that. Well she took him to a doctor who said it sounds like he is having seizures where afterwards they kind of become delusional and see things that are not there. Last night he had another episode and she called an ambulance. At the hospital they told her they can't do much for him there and to see the regular doctor. He is sceduled to have an MRI And EEG done in two weeks. My question is has anyone had this problem with their kid? And what did it end up being? Any advice will help a lot. We are very worried about him and what is going on. No it is not stress we already figured out its not that. Thanks for the help.

I would agree that it sounds like seizure behaviour, but not the aftermath of the seizure, this sounds like a seizure itself.

Partial seizures frequently manifest themselves as odd sensory experiences. Hallucinations can be part of this and are terrifying for the individual experiencing it. The temporal lobe includes a lot of the sensory stuff, and the frontal lobe includes a lot of the higher order functions like impulse control and reasoning.

Have your friend document everything she sees even if it does not seem like part of the episode itself. The setting of the incident, what he was doing prior to it, how he has been sleeping, how he is afterwards, anything she can think of. It may seem like a lot of nonsense, but the neurologist can get far more out of too much information than too little.

If there are abnormalities in the EEG or MRI, they will have a better idea what is going on, but if they are unremarkable, that does not necessarily mean that nothing is happening. The EEG can be normal even if the child is having seizures - a scalp EEG reads effectively only the outer surface of the brain (most seizures come from this area) but in many cases the readings are normal between seizures. Evidence of a seizure may remain in the tracings for up to 48 hours (inter-ictal activity) but again, this is not written in stone. The neurologist will take the history as one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.

The idea of seizures is terrifying for any parent, but it is not the end of life itself. Finding out what is going on and helping your friend's son is important, and there are many medications that are very effective in treating seizures in kids.

This sounds really serious, and any doctor who would brush you off in the way you described scares me!
He needs to go to a Neurologist! Tell his doctor you want a consult now! Don't take "no" for an answer. He should also see a psychiatrist! To rule out any psychological issues. But check his brain first, and the one to do that is the neurologist!! He needs an MRI, EEG, and possibly a sleep study done. Is he waking up doing this? Then it could be a dream / sleep disorder...or Night Terrors!

At any rate... You guys are his advocate. Do not take no for an answer when you ask for the neuro and psych consult. If you get nowhere...go to anothe doctor. Take notepad and pen...write down stuff that you are told, and use it to write questions concerns, and observations!
Things to question:
new meds
new foods
new environment
new friends
? drug use ( I know 9 is young...but today you can never be sure)
Changes in sleep pattern
Changes in school performance
Changes is friendships
Changes in eating pattern or preferences

Physical changes:
aches or pains
numbness tingling, or strange noises heard

Family history of anything similar....

I am sorry this is happening. But don't back down...be assertive . Good luck. You are in my prayers!

never known anyone with this issue. has she seen any seizing? they could be exibited in a way that she would not notice if she wasn't watching closely. i would think they could get the tests done sooner than 2 weeks from now but in the meantime they are going to have to watch and see what proceeds these episodes. they may be able to come up with a common denominator. best of luck. i hope they get to the bottom of this.
