Press the "Ctrl", "Alt" and "Delete" keys simultaneously. This brings up the Task Manager, the "Applications" window shows all of the currently running programs, clicking on the "Processes" tab at the top of the window shows all of the running processes.
Altenatively you could download the program "Process Manager" and use that.
Process Manager can be found at this link:

Control alt plus Del, then go to task manager;
You can then see Applications running, and Processes running;
One application may run many processes, and some system processes will run without an application.
You may want to work out which is what IF you are deciding what is a problem or not

For a more in depth look, you could download whatsrunning from www.whatsrunning.net It will show all programs running, what's getting loaded at startup, and show you a bunch of other interesting info. The one thing I really like, is you can right click on a process and then have it take you to a webpage explaining what the process is.
