Many people like to think classical music makes babies smarter. This is a result of the research of the 'Mozart effect' by Gordon Shaw and others. This initial research showed a slight increase in a person's IQ immediately after listening to classical music. One problem: the research has all been on adults. Penn & Teller even did an episode on this very topic on their show Bullshit! It is just something marketers have targeted to get parents to spend more money.

It is frequently suggested or stated that exposure to the right kind of music in childhood has a lasting, beneficial effect. One researcher commented: "I don't think it can hurt. I'm all for exposing children to wonderful cultural experiences. But I do think the money could be better spent on music education programs."

All things considered, exposure to classical music can be good. Babies like the rhythm and melodies. All other music can be just as apreciated, though.
