The Mayan calendar (which was adopted by the Aztecs and the Olmecs) actually used 3 different systems to keep track of time: The Long Count, the Tzolkin, and the Haab.

The Haab was a calendar of the yearly cycle and was used much like the 12-month calendars we use today.

The Tzolkin is a 20-day long cycle. Each day was named and associated with something like good or bad luck.

The Long Count is associated with what the Mayans believed to be eras of the Earth, that when the Long Count finished, a great change (or the end of the world) would take place. Though scientists have figured out how long the Long Count is, it is difficult to tell when the count started. The website I referenced gives 3 possible times for when the count started (thus 3 possible times for the count to end.)

Two of those possible dates are Dec 21 or Dec 23 of 2012, the third is a date some 260 year later.

Some say there will be a shift in the magnetic poles, which will cause a new Ice Age, as well as screw up electronics everywhere.

There's also talk of a meteor coming in 2012 that will be closer to the earth than the moon, which is really close in astronomical terms.

Or maybe it'll just be another evil republican that'll get elected in 2012 and end the world by pressing 'the button' (at the behest of big oil, of course).

Nothing special is going to happen in 2012. The Maya predicted about 1500 years ago that the current cycle of the world would end in 2012, but such predictions always turn out false.

The Aztec calendar stops in 2012, so many people think this will somehow mark "the end of the world". Guess what? In 2013, they will look back and laugh when nothing happened.

Oh when the Mayans did their calendar, that's where they stopped. Some nuts think it's the end of the world. I don't give them that much credit. After all, they never saw their demise. Besides, I have a calendar from Barnes & Noble that runs out in Feb. 2008. Does that mean that's the end of the world?

2012 is supposed to be the end of time. according to the Mayan calander. However, it doesn't mean that the world will end, but that the time as we know it will end. ever hear of the age of Aquarius. well, that is what it will be. we are currently in the capricorn age. they say that there will be a war and such. but with the new age will bring peace and tranquillity. thus a new time, ending the old one.

Nothing--it refers to the date of an ancient Mayan propecy of the end of the world. Some people have no etter sense than to take it seriously.

This is when the Mayan calendar ends.
Some people seem to think that the Mayans could predict the end of all civilisation, even though they could not predict the demise of their own.
