Something personal is always a nice gesture, but not always posible - but it is certainly the thought that counts and I am sure that your family will apprecoate whatever you send. Herea re a few suggestions....

Gift card to a store that the family may shop in

A full no words picture book of any kind- language won't matter and there are TONS of great ones out there at Barnes & Noble, Borders, Etc... you can order from the store and ship right to them. Or ask at your local Barnes & Noble store for a book in the child's speaking language - that would be great!

Fisher Price toys are universal at that age - I think you could probally find something and ship a small toy - My daughter loves them all, especailly Little People toys....

A blanket with the child's name embroidered or other personal item of that nature. Spoon engraved, brush.

a piece of really cool artwork for their room that they could keep forever.

Well, a one year old probably won't appreciate a rattle as much as a four month old would, so I would pass on that one.

My son's first birthday is in two weeks, and I'm struggling to think of something for him, too. He received so much at Christmas and as hand-me-downs from his cousins, that there really isn't anything he needs right now.

When our relatives and friends ask, I usually say that he could use clothes a size or two above what he wears now, or gift cards to the stores we go to.

Would it be possible to find out her mom's favorite store, and then purchase a gift card on-line?

Or some nice item engraved with the baby's name as a keepsake, maybe? I plan to have my son's first shoes bronzed, and when I was tiny, my grandma bought a silver plated sippy cup and had my full name and birthdate engraved on it.

having 3 kids, up until they were 2 or so, they played with the box more often then any gift giving to them.toddlers are happier with a box, dust pan, a pot, spoons and so on. then if it were Elmo, Dora, toys.

just don't put to much thought into it. she'll be fine with whatever you send. moms can always use more clothes for their toddlers too.

good luck!
