They were twins in their mother's womb. Water babies. but during the birthing process, the hippo was born and pushed ashore, while the "twin" got carried off in the current. Since the manatee didn't get any sunlight, its legs didn't develop and it became somewhat deformed by all the water. Now the manatee is turning tricks for algae casserole, and its long lost sibling is eating little balls on a children's game. Separated at birth. Tragedy...

they are both in Class Animalia, but that is about it. the hippopotamus is Superorder: Cetartiodactyla Order: Artiodactyla
while the manatee is Order: Sirenia. So they are not really that related at all.
