here they can't ask for one unless you are gone for 3 days.
but if you start being gone 2 days then coming in for 1/2 day and then going out 2 more days they have more reason to ask.
If your employer suspects foul play, especially if they have a good reason, then i think it's reasonable for them to ask.
and if there's no lying on your part, why is this such a problem?

It depends upon your state's laws. In most states it is legal for an employer to ask for a doctor's note.

Look at your companies policy! It would be strange to see a physician for a cold, and doing the employer a disservice as you could contaminate all his workers!

How do you get one retroactively, and if he requires one, he can pay the medical costs in getting it!

Most employers have a policy regarding that! Most are 3 days or more!

If you are paid for the time you were out sick, it is within their right. If not, then they mostly want you to be accountable for your time out AND OR have a reason to start building a paper trail and a reason to fire you, so even if you have to get your cousins friends uncle who is a doctor to write it, GET THE LETTER.
